plan of opening sequence (nicole davidson)

plan of opening sequence

When deciding to do a horror movie we had many ideas to the ways in which we would conduct the opening sequence. These ideas include:

Forest
One idea that we came up with was to set the opening sequence in the forest. It would include two teenage girls walking through the forest at night whilst taking their dog for a walk; we thought that night would be a good time to shot due to the fact that the audience would automatically feel a sense of insecurity and tension. Whilst taking the dog for a walk they would be followed by a man -but we wanted his identity to be unknown (wearing a white mask) and the only way the audience would know he was there would be through fast moments in the distance, camera shots, sound effects an d a quick flash on his mask at the end.

House
Another idea that we devised for the opening sequence of the film was to set it in a house. We decided to use only one character this time, a teenage girl. She would be walking around the house getting things ready on her own at night waiting for her boyfriend to arrive, when her phone starts ringing. After this there are many slow and quiet noises and actions that then lead to fast movements and smashing of furniture (glass, cupboard doors etc) all around the house. She follows the noises and then at the end of the clip a big noise is heard and she quickly turns around when the clip finishes and opening credits.

Petrol garage
The next idea that we brainstormed was a lady (25years old) drives her car into a petrol garage at about 3 0’clock in the morning, after a night at her boyfriends – the setting is dark and deserted. She is putting in petrol then suddenly hears a sound and quick movements behind her. She is under the influence of alcohol and thinks that’s it is just her imagination and the drink making her see and hear these things. She goes in to pay for her petrol and there is a CCTV camera shot that is showing someone entering her car, however she doesn’t see this. The camera then goes to a close up of her paying and then walking back to her car. The opening credits then show.

Conclusion
After thinking about each different set and storyline we concluded that the best one to use for the audience in which we are targeting would be the opening sequence set in the house. This was chosen due to the fact that it would appeal to our target audience as they could relate to the character as they are also teenagers and live in houses. It is practical for us to create this opening sequence as doing it in a house is safe and we can easily find a teenager to help star in the clip. Furthermore, setting the opening in a house invites the audience as a house is meant to be a safe and secure place so it creates a feeling of suspence and tension.
